New movie Mary Poppins Return with Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins is coming to theaters soon. With all my love to Emily, she is a wonderful actress, but not Mary. Well, to be brutally honest none of the actresses who have ever played the character before have nothing to do with real Mary from the book. I wonder if anyone read how P.L Travers described Mary?
So, this upcoming movie is going to be another Hollywood-ish disappointment of Mary Poppins extravaganza!
Although I don’t find either of actresses who played the role fit in description and what most important my imagination based on the book, I think actress Heike Makatsch who played a secretary Mia in “Love Actually» would’ve been perfect Mary! She got the look and the poise.
“Michael could see that the newcomer had shiny black hair—“Rather like a wooden Dutch doll,” whispered Jane. And that she was thin, with large feet and hands, and small, rather peering blue eyes.”

I would agree that description of Mary perfectly matches the description of a witch, but let’s be honest… that’s who she is. If you have any doubts, read the book! She is the Queen of Extraordinary in ordinary life.
My Mary Poppins is always different, she is very contemporary and didn’t look like a maid at all. She is mysteriously odd, even weird and absolutely not a singing, dancing, smiling showgirl! She is Her own Royal Highness!
She is quite opposite actually of what everyone would’ve thought about Nanny. I have to agree that book itself is quite odd and not typical but on the other hand why would I love this book otherwise.
My recent visit to a supermarket brought back my childhood memories about one of my favorite book of all Mary Poppins in the most unusual way.
We saw in front of us in line a mother with two probably autistic adult twin daughters and I immediately felt like I was in the store of Mrs.Corry and her daughters Fanny and Annie and we were about to go and glue stars back to the sky. It felt somehow like a fairytale became a reality.
Back in my childhood me and my friend were reading this book enthusiastically over and over again, chapter by chapter and we talked about all magic that happened in the book We were also in love with illustration by Russian artist G.Kalinovskiy . I’m grateful that I saw these stories through his art and it’s still with me in my imagination.
My Mary never left...
