“Where there is no Wine, there is no Love” Euripides.
For many years I have difficult relationships with Vineyards, Wineries, Grapes, and Wines. The problem was that I was born in a Wine Country. Vineyards was always a part of my surroundings. Government owned, privately owned Vineyard, doesn't matter, everyone was involved in the Wine Industry.
My parents own a small Vineyard, so my involvement with vines maintenance from early spring to late autumn was very much constant since I was 10-11 years old. While we were in school there was a mandatory regulation to spend a month in a School camp, where we're worked in Vineyards everyday for about 4 hours. The rest of the day all of us continued have fun with classmates.
You would probably ask, what maintenance? Well our vines looked different, it grows around 6-7 feet tall and from early spring you have to pick up vines from soil and tie them up on the first string (there is 3 strings). As vines progresses to grow you have to continue to tie it up for better grapes exposure to be ripen under the sun. Imagine miles and miles of those... under the sun, day after day! Now I ask...would you love that or hate it as a child or teenager? Well, I did hate it! For so many years I didn't eat grapes for the same reason.
As adding salt to the injury, my father started his own Vineyard as hobby. He is a brilliant chemist and his approach to the wine was purely scientific. He makes the
finest port I've ever tasted as well as Pinot noir, less popular choice in my opinion. And here comes the major reason why I don't drink red wine! I'm freaking tired of it! I don't want to even see it! It I all tastes the same for me.
White wine on the other hand, became my savor and peacemaker. White wine did connect and reunite me with all Wine industry. Finally I started to come to Vineyards without hesitation. I did notice now and then differences in vines growing but mostly as an observer, not the one who looks at vines and thinks about men hours of work ??.
White wine for me is ultimate sophistication. To read and understand those wine notes is pure pleasure!
Wine tasting on Long Island is underway with full speed! Another try to visit Wolffer Estate Vineyard turned out to be unsuccessful. Even though it wasn't closed for usual private event, when we arrived, it was out of capacity for those who didn't make reservation. Hmm...didn't know that I need reservation for a wine tasting... ok now I know.
We returned to Wolffer Estate Wine Stand for yet another visit - it never disappoints.
Friendliest atmosphere with people enjoying to be outside with glass of wine in one hand! Lawn live entertainment makes it even more welcoming. Plenty of space for everyone, for couple or group, though it gets a little too crowded closer to sunset time
We came to taste their signature Rose “Summer in a Bottle” - I'm always extremely judgmental about Rose but this one in particular is exceptional! This is exactly what Summer in Long Island is all about! Kudos to the marketing team with the bottle design. Just one look and you instantly want to get this bottle for yourself!
As all seats were taken, we went straight to the area where they play the Cornhole game. Despite the heat wave that day we started to play and people immediately filled other spaces next to us. We all looked like one big competitive family. I must've said it out loud - it's not surprise, I'm involuntarily people magnet. Even though I consider it as a curse, I should probably earn some income by offering my service to struggling businesses. I called this effect “Suddenly Times Square”.
Now I decided to give Wineries my rating, not as an expert but just for fun of doing it. I’m warning you that my decision is mostly based on White Wine Selection.
